I-REC and Carbon Offset/Inset
EPSOL supports organizations striving for carbon neutrality by offering solutions such as carbon offsetting and carbon removal, contributing to balancing carbon emissions and fighting climate change goals.
Carbon removal typically involves achieving CO2 savings equivalent to a company's greenhouse gas emissions through projects like renewable energy or afforestation. On the other hand, carbon offsetting involves developing projects within an organization's supply chain to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, positively impacting the ecosystem. This allows organizations to reduce their overall greenhouse gas emissions through reductions made in their resources.
For carbon removal initiatives, an organization’s carbon footprint is first calculated and reported. Greenhouse gases are then analyzed according to ISO 14064 standards, and improvements are made to minimize emissions wherever possible. For emissions that cannot be reduced, carbon offsetting efforts are initiated.
Carbon certificates play a crucial role; voluntary carbon trading post-Kyoto Protocol enables the acquisition of carbon certificates. In this system, a carbon certificate serves as proof of activities leading to CO2 equivalent reductions.
Additionally, there are widely recognized standards such as IREC for renewable energy plants. IREC is a certification system for organizations producing electricity from renewable sources. Under this system, producers can demonstrate that their electricity comes from renewable sources and offer reliable and internationally recognized certificates to buyers wishing to balance or neutralize their Scope 2 emissions.
